In the mid-nineteen fifties, three Christian ladies became extremely burdened about a closed Lutheran church in the town of Ivoryton, CT. Their concern, combined with a leading of the Holy Spirit, prodded them to begin to meet regularly for intercessory prayer that God would once again open the doors of the closed church. God heard their prayers and by His sovereign providence and in His perfect timing, He sent them a missionary organization whose specific purpose was to reopen closed churches.
This was just the beginning of God’s working. God’s provision extended far beyond what they thought or asked for. He used a Christian businessman to provide the necessary funds to purchase a building and on Easter Sunday morning in 1955, the very first service of Hillside Bible Church was held. Shortly thereafter a Pastor was called and the church began reaching families in the surrounding community. Due to God’s blessing and added increase of families, the church outgrew the Hillside building.
In 1962 we purchased property in Old Saybrook which has been the church’s physical location since then.
Today, we still stand committed to the gospel message “to preach Jesus Christ crucified,” which offers the forgiveness of sins and a reconciled relationship with God.
It is only by God’s grace that we can stand upon our rich history of the past, strive to live faithfully in the present, and expect great things from God in the future. By Faith in Christ, every sin can be forgiven by God, every person can be restored to God, and every person will enjoy eternal life with God… all to the glory of God!
